Mowrator S1: Kickstarter Campaign Launched for Remote-Controlled Lawn Mower

Mowrator S1 remote control robot lawn mower

Admittedly, the Mowrator S1 isn’t your typical lawn robot like you’re used to. It comes with a rather unconventional concept and is perfect for those who aren’t quite ready to fully entrust their lawn care to robotics. The Mowrator is controlled via a remote, reminiscent of model airplanes. It sports a traditional sickle cutting system commonly found in conventional lawnmowers. An optional fan kit is touted to better capture and mulch leaves with its suction.

The Oasa R1 recently departed from the typical blade setup seen in lawn robots, also opting for something new. Now, with the Mowrator, we’re introduced to another model featuring a traditional lawnmower cutting system. However, this isn’t your run-of-the-mill autonomous robot mower – and that’s a good thing.

The Mowrator lawn mower robot boasts significantly more power than your average mower bot, tackling even tall grass or weeds with ease. There’s a reason why the startup Mowrator promotes the S1 with “Mow like a beast”. Their Kickstarter campaign* for the S1 has now launched with a 40% discount.

Traditional sickle cutting system and remote control

The sickle cutting system of the Mowrator S1Conventional lawn robots with their free-swinging blades are designed to keep the grass short by mowing it regularly. The Mowrator S1, equipped with its traditional sickle cutting system, is designed to tackle even very tall and dense grass. This is impressively demonstrated in this video.

The cutting height can be adjusted from 1.5-4.6 in (40-120 mm) with a cutting width of 21 in (53 cm). Optional self-sharpening blades are available. For fallen leaves in the fall, an optional fan kit is offered to better suction and mulch the leaves. A similar system is installed in the Airseekers Tron. Additionally, a hose attachment is available to directly suck leaves into the grass catcher.

Who is the Mowrator suitable for?

Mowrator S1 with interchangeable batteryThe Mowrator is primarily suitable for larger, demanding gardens and rough terrain that you don’t want to mow regularly, making a traditional mower less practical.

With the Mowrator S1, you can mow an area of up to 1.25 ac (5000 m²) on a single battery charge. According to the manufacturer, it covers around 0.5 ac (2000 m²) per hour. It then takes about 1.5 hours to recharge after mowing.

The potential charging cycles of the interchangeable batteries are significantly higher due to LiFePO4 technology compared to common Li-Ion batteries. The cutting unit motor boasts an impressive 8 Nm of torque. With its all-wheel drive, the Mowrator can handle slopes of up to 75% (37°).

How does navigation and obstacle detection work?

Remote control of the Mowrator S1 lawn mowerThe Mowrator S1 is operated via an intuitive remote control with two joysticks for direction and speed. However, it doesn’t require constant control; it can also be set to autopilot with a button press, allowing it to mow in parallel paths autonomously.

Another button makes the S1 mower turn and mow the next row. The grass catcher of the Mowrator can also be emptied at a chosen spot with the push of a button, without needing manual intervention.

Additional buttons on the remote control manage the mowing mode or the driving and blade speed. A centrally located stop button is easily accessible to prevent accidents. Four ultrasonic sensors and a shock absorber provide additional protection, immediately stopping the mower in case of collision.

Overview of Mowrator Mower Robot Functions

Conclusion: Unconventional concept with real benefits

The Mowrator S1 takes unconventional paths, but with a clear goal: to mow large gardens and rough terrain with tall grass. While you still largely control the lawn mower robot, given its performance, that’s entirely appropriate. However, unlike traditional mowing, you won’t break a sweat. The S1 won’t replace traditional mower bots, but it certainly has its place. The Mowrator is now available for pre-order with a 40% discount through the Kickstarter campaign.
