New Gardena Robot Lawn Mowers for 2025: Finally Wire-Free With the Smart Sileno Free

New Gardena Robot Lawn Mowers 2025 – Smart Sileno Free Without Perimeter Wire

The official launch of Gardena’s 2025 robot lawn mower line-up has now confirmed several earlier rumours that caught the attention of the industry. Until now, Gardena was primarily known for its popular models in the mid- and entry-level price segments. True innovation was rare: the company traditionally focused on proven, reliable technology, with all its strengths and limitations. But that’s about to change: the upcoming Gardena Smart Sileno Free introduces a wire-free mowing solution, breaking away from boundary wire systems for the first time. The fact that this model without perimeter wire comes from a well-established manufacturer, not a tech start-up, is almost an exception in today’s robot mower market. And it raises expectations accordingly.

Update September 11, 2024: Gardena has now officially unveiled its 2025 models. The new line-up includes the Smart SILENO Free, Smart SILENO Pro, and Smart SILENO Max. We’ve updated parts of this article to reflect the latest details.

Gardena’s Position in the Robot Lawn Mower Market

Gardena, a brand under the Husqvarna Group, has long been popular among consumers, particularly thanks to its Smart Sileno models. These were among the first affordable robot lawn mowers for average homeowners, widely available in hardware stores and through online retailers. Initially, the “Smart” label referred primarily to basic connectivity features, such as Wi-Fi support and limited app-based control.

When the first fully wire-free mowers entered the market, Gardena responded in 2022 by launching its own GPS-based system, known as Gardena LONA. This hybrid solution, however, still required a boundary wire—due to its relatively high positional tolerance of 0.5 to 1 meter compared to RTK-based systems.

Despite the new tech, the mowing logic remained unchanged. Even with LONA, Gardena robot mowers continued to use a random mowing pattern, which is widely considered inefficient. While some still advocate for this approach, those voices are often tied to the sale of legacy models. Today’s advanced robot mowers, which operate in clean, systematic lines, offer clear benefits with no real drawbacks.

Whether Gardena plans to move toward structured mowing with the new Smart Sileno Free remains to be seen. Unfortunately, it’s far from certain – especially when looking at current trends within the parent company. Established corporations like Gardena often struggle to adopt radical technological changes, unlike agile start-ups that are quicker to embrace innovation.

As the market enters its fourth season since the introduction of boundary-free robot lawn mowers for the masses, Gardena is now signalling a shift with its new Smart Sileno Free. The move comes late, arguably surprisingly late, for a brand whose parent company, Husqvarna, has long been a dominant force in the robotic mower segment. It’s unlikely that budget constraints were the reason for the delay, which only heightens expectations. Many are now hoping that Gardena has learned from the early missteps of other manufacturers.

One of the biggest competitors in this price range, Worx, was the first well-established brand to jump into the wire-free market with the Worx Landroid Vision in early 2023. However, the results were mixed. The model struggled with immature software and hardware that limited its usability. Customer satisfaction was low and still hasn’t recovered.

Shortly after, Gardena’s parent company Husqvarna released its own wireless series, the Automower NERA. Unlike camera-based systems, these models use RTK positioning and are targeted at a different price segment. But despite the more advanced navigation on paper, operational limitations quickly became apparent. The real-world mowing area is still restricted. While customers have generally been more satisfied, much of this can be attributed to stronger dealer support rather than the technology itself.

What Technology Powers the Gardena Sileno Free?

Gardena has introduced three new product lines for the 2025 season, including the Smart Sileno Free. This model is designed for boundary-free operation and does not require perimeter wires, signal towers, or external antennas. Navigation is based on satellite-supported GNSS, which may be supplemented with reference data from an internet connection. The positioning accuracy is around 10 to 30 centimetres, which is significantly less precise than RTK systems that typically reach about 2 centimetres.

Gardena Smart Sileno Pro, Max and Free – Robot Lawn Mowers for 2025The system continues to use Gardena’s LONA technology, which is integrated via the included smart gateway. A constant internet connection is required for the mower to function, which is unusual compared to other wire-free models. An optional radar sensor is available to help detect and avoid obstacles during operation.

From a technical perspective, this navigation setup raises concerns. Gardena’s parent company Husqvarna also continues to rely heavily on RTK systems in its latest models. While these systems can perform well on open, well-defined lawns, they often struggle in more complex residential gardens. The additional setup and maintenance work tends to fall back on dealers or end users. In 2024, Husqvarna already experienced noticeable setbacks and lost market share to more agile manufacturers from Asia. This trend seems to be continuing, especially as the technology being offered still lags behind in some respects.

At the same time, companies like TerraMow have started using camera-only navigation. These systems rely on high-resolution imaging and artificial intelligence and require no external infrastructure. The key to their performance lies in the software and the amount of training data behind it. Current comparisons show that the differences between brands are still significant and continue to evolve over time.

Gardena’s New Models and Prices for 2025 (EU)

In addition to the Smart Sileno Free, Gardena is releasing two more model lines that continue to use perimeter wires. These traditional versions are designed for users who are already familiar with the existing system. The main differences between models are based on lawn size coverage.

  • Smart Sileno Pro, 400 m² – ~$950
  • Smart Sileno Pro, 600 m² – ~$1,050
  • Smart Sileno Max, 800 m² – ~$1,275
  • Smart Sileno Max, 1,200 m² – ~$1,490
  • Smart Sileno Max, 1,500 m² – ~$1,600

Smart Sileno Free (wire-free):

  • Smart Sileno Free, 600 m² – ~$1,600
  • Smart Sileno Free, 800 m² – ~$1,925
  • Smart Sileno Free, 1,200 m² – ~$2,140

Final Thoughts: Is This Really Innovation, or Just Catching Up?

It is official now. A well-known manufacturer is finally introducing a robot lawn mower that does not require a boundary wire. However, in 2025, going wire-free alone is no longer enough to count as innovation. Gardena is also unlikely to stand out with pricing, since there are already more affordable and technically superior wire-free alternatives available. Models like the Navimow i105N, Mova 600, or Yuka mini already offer competitive solutions.

At the price of Gardena’s top model, buyers could even consider a previous generation Luba 2, which is a proven and refined option. This raises doubts about whether Gardena’s long-awaited launch will truly be a success or if the company may have missed the moment to lead this shift. Independent tests will soon show how the new system holds up in real-world conditions.
